Eeny, meeny, miny, moe

One trend I have noticed among my department's fresh graduates after finding a job (for those going to industry; post docs will continue to lead a pauper's life for another 2 years) - almost everyone will buy a new car to go to work. A senior has just bought a new Lexus. Camrys and Accords are the most popular.

Now I feel like getting myself a new set of wheels too. I have also found out the BMW 3-series ain't that unaffordable after all.

hmmm...Civic, Camry, Accord or Beemer?

Yep, and then be teethered to your job and dare not disobey the boss no matter how unreasonable because there are debts to pay.

These cars aren't that expensive, and one does not need to be in such huge debts that take a long time to pay off.

It is already possible to buy a new Camry on a grad student's stipend (monthly installments paid over 4 - 5 years, the length of a typical engineering PhD program), if your housing rent isn't too expensive and you are savvy with your expenditures. And I don't mean 'eating grass'.

I still hold the opinion that saddling yourself with debt, especially when they're unnecessary (well, most people can't pay for a house outright), is akin to restricting your options and reducing your independence.

Which might possibly explain why for many people, life in Singapore is miserable. You have to take a lot of shit just to be able to have a roof over your head.

would honestly recommend you getting a camry - reliable, cheap if you need to send it to the workshop and toyota's fast gonna be the world's largest car maker with good customer support as well.

I personally drive a bmw 3-series, and so does my suitemate, its a great car in my opinion, but I feel that the camry has more space, more power and is higher up in the toyota line just stopping short of lexus instead of just an entry level beemer. Well up to you lah.
